Course specific prerequisites

In addition to the general requirements to study at advanced level at Chalmers, necessary subject or project specific prerequisite competences (if any) must be fulfilled. Alternatively, the student must obtain the necessary competences during the course. The examiner will formulate and check these prerequisite competences.

The student will only be admitted in agreement with the examiner.

Aim

The aim of the course is to provide a platform to work and solve challenging cross-disciplinary authentic problems from different stakeholders in society such as the academy, industry or public institutions. Additionally, the aim is that students from different educational programs practice working efficiently in global multidisciplinary development teams.

Learning outcomes (after completion of the course the student should be able to)

Course specific:
  • describe (and discuss) the difference between global emissions (CO2, CH4, N2O) and local emissions (CO, HC, NOX, PM)
  • describe (and discuss) the emissions from “well-to-wheel” and the implications on emissions related to land use, mineral extraction, use of transportation, global climate and health effects
  • describe (and discuss) the different emissions from different modes of transportation and their effect on global climate and health effects.
  • analyze (and critically reflect upon) one type of measurement technique, the pros and cons and the consequences for society
  • perform a multi-criteria analysis and to present and discuss the results during a seminar.
  • discuss (and reflect upon) the consequences of different system boundaries, lack of knowledge, Societal structure (laws and regulations, individual standpoint, etc) on emissions from transportation

Content

The course is divided into 5 modules connected to the ILO described above. The tasks/assignments are individual, and the project (and lab) is performed in groups of 4-6 students. To each module there
will be a number of lectures (and Q&A) as well as references to supplementary reading.
  1. Global/system overview - Assignment 1 (ILO-1)
  2. Energy carriers (emissions from productions) - Assignment 2 (ILO-2)
  3. Emissions & emission reduction - Assignment 3 (ILO-3)
  4. Emissions measurement & monitoring - Lab (ILO-4)
  5. Emissions in society (health effects, politics & regulation),
  6. Project presentation - (ILO 5 & 6)

Organisation

The course is run by a teaching team.
The main part of the course is a challenge driven project. The challenge may range from being broad societal to profound research driven. The project task is solved in a group. The course is supplemented by on-demand teaching and learning of the skills necessary for the project. The project team will have one university examiner, one or a pole of university supervisors and one or a pole of external co-supervisors if applicable.

Literature

Relevant literature is retrieved and acquired by the students as a part of the project.

Examination including compulsory elements

Individual quiz, test and/or assignments. Lab and team project with report and presentations.

The course examiner may assess individual students in other ways than what is stated above if there are special reasons for doing so, for example if a student has a decision from Chalmers on educational support due to disability.
