Aim

The aim of the Automotive Engineering Project is to provide possibilities for the students to participate in development projects, to train problem-oriented learning and to act in an automotive engineering environment. The projects have focus on early product development, i.e concept study phases and test and evaluation of physical prototypes or simulation models. The course is limited to ground vehicles.

Learning outcomes (after completion of the course the student should be able to)

A. Work in a project

  1. Individually, and in group identify and formulate automotive engineering questions and problems and to plan and perform the project within given time frame
  2. Define project goals, deliverables, scope, time planning, stake holders, roles and responsibilities for the group members
  3. Deal with open problems, including handling of uncertainties, limited information, identification and assessments of risks and changes
  4. Work in team and to identify, combine and use own and the team members different competencies and skills in an efficient way
  5. Analyze, make visible and problematize the importance of gender equality aspects in the development of vehicles, vessels and transport systems.
  6. Discuss and reflect on gender equality, equality and diversity in the context of the professional role of an engineer.

B. Develop an automotive product or system

  1. Follow a systematic methodology based on customer value (interaction with the "customer" and understanding of the value that can be created from the customers needs) 
  2. Apply previously developed knowledge and skills on theory, methods, experiments and CAE tools to work with industrial problems and simulations within automotive engineering development
  3. Create/apply suitable simulation models and experiment to solve a specific automotive engineering problem 
  4. Create an assessible prototype or model of the chosen solution and to evaluate if it meets the specification and the requirements

C. Present and evaluate the project

  1. In written and orally present the project and argue and defend the developed technical solution
  2. Evaluate if the project has reached the objectives and possibly analyze necessary actions to reach these objectives
  3. Identify ethical aspects and make ethical judgements in automotive engineering development work
  4. Reflect upon and assess own and other group members individual contributions, skills and roles in relation to the project

Content

The projects in the course are automotive product development tasks inspired by research or by the cooperation between Chalmers and the local industry. Each project makes a deeper analysis within one of the three focus areas (Powertrain, Vehicle dynamics or Safety). Each problem-oriented study has a clear target and is mainly a theoretical activity focusing on evaluation of alternative solutions and planning of activities and resources needed to demonstrate a concept, e.g., in a vehicle. The project course also involves management of the team, project definition including deliverables, time planning including milestones, risk analysis and group dynamics The project management process used in the projects focuses on how to manage the development phase in a project.

- working in a process with the objective to create value for others, by identifying your own and other peoples resources and by handling uncertinties.
