Applicants enrolled in a programme at Chalmers where the course is included in the study programme are exempted from fulfilling the requirements above.

Course specific prerequisites

Mechanics, Machine Elements (Applied Mechanics or similar)

Aim

The course should provide the students with knowledge about modeling, analysis and design aspects of components and systems in automotive powertrains including IC engines, transmissions and other components responsible for the transfer of work from the piston to the wheels.

Learning outcomes (after completion of the course the student should be able to)

- Identify, describe and choose the most frequently used components and sub systems in powertrains for automotive vehicles. - Model and simulate the performance of mechanical systems in combustion engines and drivelines. - Synthesize (create), motivate and evaluate the mechanical design of a powertrain.

Content

The course includes the following: - Mechanical layout of powertrain - Components (eg. differentials, planetary gears, gear change mechanisms and systems, including some lubrication and tribology aspects) - Analyses and simulation techniques - Manual gear box and "automatic manual" gearbox - Automatic gearbox/transmissions - CVT gearbox - Power split - Clutches and Torque converters - Balancing of combustion engines - Design considerations of the mechanical components in combustion engines - Design considerations when a transmission is chosen for a particular vehicle

The course is primarily related to three global sustainability goals, namely:

  • #3, good health and well-being, e.g. exhaust emissions
  • #7, affordable and clean energy, e.g. efficiency and CO2
  • #13, climate action, e.g. efficiency and CO2

Examination including compulsory elements

There is a written final exam. Completed assignments will be a pre-requisite for the exam.

The course examiner may assess individual students in other ways than what is stated above if there are special reasons for doing so, for example if a student has a decision from Chalmers on educational support due to disability.
