Eligibility

General entry requirements for bachelor's level (first cycle)
Applicants enrolled in a programme at Chalmers where the course is included in the study programme are exempted from fulfilling the requirements above.

Specific entry requirements

The same as for the programme that owns the course.
Applicants enrolled in a programme at Chalmers where the course is included in the study programme are exempted from fulfilling the requirements above.

Course specific prerequisites

Mathematics, especially linear algebra, differential equations and integrals.
Mechanics, especially statics.

Aim

The aim of the course is that the students should attain basic understanding of fundamental laws and concepts of classical mechanics required to understand real world dynamic phenomena. Further, the course should give skills needed to solve basic problems in dynamics. The concepts of mathematical modelling and numerical solutions through Python are studied.

Learning outcomes (after completion of the course the student should be able to)

  • Describe and calculate the motion (position, velocity, acceleration) for particles and solids in plane motion.
  • Apply free-body diagrams and solve Newton's second law for planar problems.
  • Describe and explain kinetic energy, potential energy and work. Solve dynamical problems using these concepts.
  • Apply linear and angular momentum for particles and solids in plane motion.
  • Analyse and solve vibrations for systems of one degree of freedom; with and without damping.
  • Explain and calculate the moment of inertia for simple solids. Solve impact problems.
  • Analyse and solve dynamic problems numerically using Python.

Content

Dynamics of particles: Kinematics. Newton's laws. Work, energy, linear and angular momentum. Energy and momentum methods, in particular conservation laws. Vibrations. Systems of particles. Dynamics of rigid bodies: Moment of inertia. Rotation about a fixed axis. General plane motion. Impact.

Organisation

The teaching will be based on lectures, problem solving sessions, supervision of project work, and consultations.

Literature

Mekanik, Ragnar Grahn och Per-Åke Jansson, Studentlitteratur, 2013. Formelsamling i mekanik, M.M. Japp, Inst. för teknisk mekanik.

Examination including compulsory elements

Written exam (6 credits). Project in dynamics using Python (1.5 credits). Optional written quizzes that can give bonus to the final exam.

The course examiner may assess individual students in other ways than what is stated above if there are special reasons for doing so, for example if a student has a decision from Chalmers on educational support due to disability.
