Course specific prerequisites

Mathematics from the first year of studies

Aim

The aim is to make the students familiar with important concepts and laws in mechanics and wave physics

Learning outcomes (after completion of the course the student should be able to)

  • Have an understanding of basic concepts in mechanics and be able to apply these to solve relevant problems.
  • Have an understanding of basic concepts in wave physics and be able to apply these to solve relevant problems.
  • Be able to translate theoretical knowledge in the areas of mechanics and optics in an experimental context in order to be able to acquire new knowledge.

Content

Classical Mechanics: Kinematics. Forces. Dynamics. Particle system. Movement equations. Harmonious oscillating motion. Energy laws. Stiff body movement around fixed shoulder. Impulse torque layers. Mathematical description of general wave motion. Harmonic waves. Superposition.
Acoustic waves: pressure, speed, intensity, reflection.
Electromagnetic waves: interference, diffraction, resolution, reflection, polarization.

Organisation

The teaching is given in the form of lectures, exercises and laboratory work. Participation in laboratory sessions is mandatory.

Literature

University Physics by Young and Freedman. Pearson Education Limited. 2019 edition. ISBN: 9781292314730.

Examination including compulsory elements

The course ends with a written exam. The course includes two optional quizzes. Final grades are obtained when both the exam and laboratory work have been approved.

The course examiner may assess individual students in other ways than what is stated above if there are special reasons for doing so, for example if a student has a decision from Chalmers on educational support due to disability.
