Eligibility

General entry requirements for bachelor's level (first cycle)
Applicants enrolled in a programme at Chalmers where the course is included in the study programme are exempted from fulfilling the requirements above.

Specific entry requirements

The same as for the programme that owns the course.
Applicants enrolled in a programme at Chalmers where the course is included in the study programme are exempted from fulfilling the requirements above.

Course specific prerequisites

The course builds on knowledge from high school physics and the D-program courses in Linear algebra and Calculus.

Aim

To present an overview of Physics aiming at introducing some physical models useful in engineering and helps to develop a deeper understanding of nature.

Learning outcomes (after completion of the course the student should be able to)

(Mechanics:)
  • be familiar with kinetics.
  • apply Newtons laws to solve problems dealing with particles and rigid bodies.
(Thermodynamics:)
  • use the laws of thermodynamics to solve problems dealing with idealized thermodynamic processes.
  • solve simple heat conduction problems.
(Wave physics:)
  • solve simple problems dealing with the propagation of travelling waves.
  • solve problems that demand understanding of the phenomena interference and diffraction.

Content

Classical mechanics, thermodynamics, wave physics and electricity.

Organisation

Lectures, exercises and labs.

Literature

"University Physics with Modern Physics", 15th edition. Global edition. Young & Freedman. Pearson. (the 14th edition can also be used in the course)

Examination including compulsory elements

Compulsory laborations and written exam.

The course examiner may assess individual students in other ways than what is stated above if there are special reasons for doing so, for example if a student has a decision from Chalmers on educational support due to disability.
