Aim

The aim of the course is to offer the student an opportunity to independently and critically examine a topic that touches on the relationship between technology, science and society. The goal is for the student to develop the ability to formulate and examine problems in the field, and to do so using fruitful scientific methods and theoretical perspectives.

Learning outcomes (after completion of the course the student should be able to)

  • formulate and delimit a scientifically relevant research problem within the chosen subject concerning the relationship between technology, science and society
  • plan, carry out and report the work within a given time frame with given resources and taking into account relevant ethical aspects
  • carry out a systematic literature study and search for and obtain other relevant background material aa well as  empirical material
  • describe, review and evaluate relevant research within the subject
  • independently use concepts, theories and methods used in the chosen subject area
  • present, analyze, and reflect upon  conclusions that are well supported by clear argumentation
  • present the project in written form, where the text is well organised, well written and easy to follow

Content

The thesis course gives the student/student group the opportunity to take on an independent thesis work in Swedish or English that touches on the relationship between technology, science and society.

Organisation

The course work includes choosing a topic as well as formulating and delimiting a scientifically relevant problem within this topic. Furthermore, it includes planning, carrying out and reporting the thesis work within a given time frame with given resources and in a way that shows the student's ability to fulfill the learning objectives. The essay will then be presented in written and oral form. The work mainly consists of self-study, supported by supervision. The essay work can be done individually or in groups.
The 7.5 credits are completed over one semester. A course round starts at the beginning of each semester.

Literature

Literature is chosen in accordance with the student's choice of thesis subject.

Examination including compulsory elements

The course is examined through submission and assessment of the finished thesis, as well as through an oral presentation of the thesis. Grades for the course are given on a Pass or Fail scale.

The course examiner may assess individual students in other ways than what is stated above if there are special reasons for doing so, for example if a student has a decision from Chalmers on educational support due to disability.
