Aim

The purpose of the course is to give students the basic knowledge and understanding of project management, i.e. to introduce the central concepts and models related to participating in and leading projects as well as how these concepts and models can be applied.

Learning outcomes (after completion of the course the student should be able to)

After completion of the course the student should be able to:

1. Account for and discuss theories and models of project management

2. Apply theories and models of project management to empirical examples.

3. Discuss relationship between different aspects of projects, i.e. how specific project prerequisites  or choices within some aspects ( e.g. project goal, project model etc) impact other project aspects (e.g. project factors, control s flexibility, communication etc).

Content

Increasing range of assignments in both private and professional contexts are driven in a project form, including study assignments. Therefore, it is important that students, early in the course of education, gain understanding of main project management theories and tools. The course contains a broad range of topics that provide an understanding of how to work in and lead projects. Examples of such topics include project initiation and pre-study, project planning, execution and termination, different project models, project economy and risk managment, leadership and communication in projects, projects in organisations etc.

Organisation

The course has three main components: lectures, seminars and the project work. The seminars imply an active individual participation and  preparation. The project work is performed in groups, however strong individual commitment is required throughout the process. 
The course has two parts: in the first part the main focus is on lectures and seminars, whereas the main assigment during the second part is the project work.

The course literature will be decided at the start of the course.

Examination including compulsory elements

The course is examined in two parts:

1. Intermediate test (3.0 hp) - an individual examination that covers the topics of the course. Graded as U/D.

2. Project (3.0 hp) - a written group assignment. Graded as U/D.

The overall course grade is based on the sum of the marks of the two above examination parts, graded as  U/3/4/5. See more detailed information in the Course PM.

The course examiner may assess individual students in other ways than what is stated above if there are special reasons for doing so, for example if a student has a decision from Chalmers about disability study support.
