Aim

The aim of the course is to address the interaction between innovation patterns and the dynamics of technology development and diffusion. Taking an  industry perspective, it provides conceptual tools and frameworks that  describe the underlying supply- and demand-side innovation mechanisms explaining patterns of industry evolution.

Learning outcomes (after completion of the course the student should be able to)

By the end of the course students will be able to:

(1) explain and critically discuss conceptual tools and frameworks related to technology and industry lifecycles, technological regimes and sectoral patterns of innovation, imitation, path dependency, patterns and factors of innovation diffusion and adoption;

(2) compare and contrast different theoretical perspectives covered in the course;

(3) use the abovementioned conceptual tools and frameworks to analyze empirical cases;

(4) identify main strategic and policy implications related to innovation patterns and the dynamics of technology development and diffusion

Content

The course covers tools and concepts to understand and explain the drivers of innovation and the impacts of innovation and technical change on the economy. The main focus is on describing and explaining recurring patterns of technological, industrial and market change in relation to innovation. The content is divided into several modules covering technological and industrial innovation patterns, as well as supply- and deman-side innovation mechanisms.

Organisation

The course is structured around a number of lectures, seminars and assignments which address the course topics at varying levels of detail. In order to make the course as stimulating and instructive as possible, we encourage discussions between teachers and students.

The literature will be announced at the beginning of the course.

Examination including compulsory elements

Lectures will be an important part of the teaching, but group discussions, seminars and presentations will also be included. Examination will be conducted through take home exams and hand-in assignments.

The course examiner may assess individual students in other ways than what is stated above if there are special reasons for doing so, for example if a student has a decision from Chalmers on educational support due to disability.
