Aim
The course aims at developing an understanding of the prerequisites for R&D and innovation work in large established organizations. More specifically the course will address key elements within the areas of:- Organization
- Project management
- Product development
- Innovation management
Learning outcomes (after completion of the course the student should be able to)
- Describe fundamental concepts in innovation and R&D- Describe different types of product development processes
- Apply different methods and tools for efficient product development work
- Describe the prerequisites for innovation work and their implications on the strategic and operative levels

Content
The course contains the following three areas:1) Organization theory and project management
- Fundamental mechanisms of different forms of organizing, and their implications for product development and innovation
- Alternative organization designs and their implications
- Power and politics in established organizations
2) Product development
- Important organizational issues for efficient product development
- Product development processes, such as Stage-gate and Agile, for the development of products and services
- Methods and tools for efficient product development work (eg. portfolio management, platforms and modularization)
3) Innovation management in established organizations
- Characteristics of, and challenges in, established organizations
- Methods and tools for efficient product development work (eg. portfolio management, platforms and modularization)

- Characteristics of, and challenges in, established organizations
- Relationship between the organizational design and firm's abilities regarding innovation
- Prerequisites for innovation (barriers and enablers) and their implications on the strategic and operative levels
Organisation
The course consists of lectures and seminars. The seminars require active participation and preparation.Literature

The course is examined continuously during the study period through various partial examinations.
The course examiner may assess individual students in other ways than what is stated above if there are special reasons for doing so, for example if a student has a decision from Chalmers on educational support due to disability.
