Aim

The course purpose is to provide basic understanding in economic functions, terms and theories as well as basic understanding in organizational issues.

Learning outcomes (after completion of the course the student should be able to)

  • describe how companies interact with their surroundings.
  • account for and use of basic terminology within the field of industrial management.
  • describe and apply different models for calculating products and services.
  • implement and analyze investment calculations based on given conditions.
  • describe and plan for budget and budgeting processes.
  • account for financing and capital requirements.
  • understand and describe annual reports with a focus on balance sheet and income statement.
  • conduct financial analysis on the basis of given conditions.
  • identify, exemplify and apply different organizational theory concepts and models.
  • utilize the above knowledge to analyze, evaluate and improve a company's business.

Content

The course starts with a section on the role of the industrial company in society and the organization of the industrial work in a historical perspective. Thereafter, theories and models are discussed to describe the industrial company in financial terms. After an initial review of basic concepts and performance planning, various models are considered for product calculation. The course continues with a section that deals with calculation of investments. Subsequently the course includes a part with the design of a company's external annual reports as well as methods and models that can be used to analyze a company's financial position and results.

Organisation

The course content consists of lectures and exercises. The lectures introduce and exemplify essential terms and theoretical models. The exercises are used to deepen the basic understanding of the theoretical models and to provide the students with skill sets.

Literature will be announced two weeks prior to course start.

Examination including compulsory elements

The course is examined by written examination and a project. The grades are set based on the result of the written examination. Grades U (= failed), 3, 4 and 5 are used.

The course examiner may assess individual students in other ways than what is stated above if there are special reasons for doing so, for example if a student has a decision from Chalmers on educational support due to disability.
