Aim

The aim of the course is to provide basic knowledge about design, development and management of production organizations with application in industry and other types of activities including service and public organizations. Theories and concepts presented in the course have a wide range of applications in the production of goods and services. The course focuses on practical production issues and provides a good understanding of professional roles in the field of production management.

Learning outcomes (after completion of the course the student should be able to)

Knowledge and understanding
  • Have a good understanding of the conditions and performances of different production systems.
  • Define important concepts in the production management field.
  • Have a good understanding of the design of workplaces from an ergonomic perspective.
  • Have a basic understanding of the effects of: process types selections, layout selections and capacity decisions
Skills and abilities
  • Have the ability to analyze production systems in a company or organization for effective solutions.
  • Have the ability to analyze and improve different types of operations for enhanced efficiency and competitiveness.
Judgement and approach
  • Choosing methods and key performance indicators for adequate measurement, development and evaluation of production and production systems.
  • Have a systematic and critical approach by analyzing and designing production systems for goods and services from a socio-technical perspective which includes efficiency, group-based organizations, internal work motivation and social sustainable development.

Content

The course provides a basic understanding of the production core in the organization, from both a theoretical and practical perspective. During the course, students will meet, discuss and analyze different perspectives and methods to understand and improve the management of production for increased competitiveness. A part of the course will be devoted to a production project that gives the students training in analyzing activities and applying models on practical problems that companies and public enterprises encounter.

Organisation

The course comprises a series of lectures, a project and exercises.

The literature will be announced at the course webpage not later than two weeks before the start of the course.

Examination including compulsory elements

Examination has two reports to Ladok:
  • Group project (2 credits). Grading scale G/UG
  • Written examination (5.5 credits) Grading scale: (Fail, 3, 4 and 5)
For final grade, approved results are required on both parts. Final grade in the course is based on the individual written examination. All material and lecture / exercise content form the basis of examination. Alternative forms of examination can be used.

The course examiner may assess individual students in other ways than what is stated above if there are special reasons for doing so, for example if a student has a decision from Chalmers on educational support due to disability.
