BOM225 - Management and organisation in the construction sector or equivalent knowledge / abilities.Aim
The purpose of the course "Accounting and financial management" is to deepen and broaden the student's knowledge and abilities in economy and organisation.In area of economy the course concentrates on understanding the accounting (RR, BR), the function of budgets and introducing valuation of projects and assets.
Regarding organisation the course broaden the student's perspective on work safety and labor laws with a special focus on work environment and the aspiration towards safe workplaces in the construction industry.
Learning outcomes (after completion of the course the student should be able to)
- Describe the most common employment legislation on the Swedish labour market.
- Describe the requirements that different stakeholders / agencies in society on safety on a construction site.
- Conduct a inventory of risks in a construction project regarding physical and organisational risks, also considering subcontractors roles.
- Analyse, evaluate and propose measures to control identified risks and health problems.
- Conduct financial analysis based on given conditions.
- Understand and describe annual reports with a focus on the income statement and balance sheet.
- Describe, plan and implement budget and budgeting processes.
- On a basic level predict and calculate the outcomes of financial decisions in terms of changes in financial reports.
- Assess the outcomes of financial decisions.
- Describe different methods and models for valuation of projects and assets.
- On a basic level, adjust parameters in valuation models to existing conditions.
Content
The course intends to deepen the financial & organisational field, of extra interest to project managers and business developers, from the basic course.In the organisational area, focus is on the construction industry's work environment and risk / safety handling. Basic employment legislation as well as safety and risk prevention work in practice will be touched upon.
In the economic field, basic book-keeping and budgeting will be addressed. Economic forecasts, outcomes and links between balance sheet, income statement and cash flow in decision-making situations as well as the valuation of financial outcomes will be discussed.
Investment calculation as a basis for valuation will be addressed and influencing parameters will be discussed. Other methods of valuation will also be presented.
Organisation
Learning activities in the course consist of lectures, seminars, exercises and projects.Projects have both a theoretical and practical basis and content.
Several parts of the course will be mandatory as experience accumulation through exchange with others is central to many areas of the course.

Both projects and the exam as well as all mandatory parts has to be approved to receive a approved final grade.Projects are carried out in groups and focus on different parts of the course content. Bonus points for the exam may (but need not) be applied.
The exam covers the entire content of the course and the outcome of the exam determines the degree of the final grade.
Alternative means of examination of the course in whole or in part can be used in special cases.
The course examiner may assess individual students in other ways than what is stated above if there are special reasons for doing so, for example if a student has a decision from Chalmers on educational support due to disability.
