Aim

The course purpose is to provide basic understanding in economic functions, terms and theories.

Learning outcomes (after completion of the course the student should be able to)

Knowledge and understanding
  • Explain basic economic concepts
  • Explain the balance sheet and income statement, cash flow analysis and account for different financing alternatives
  • Explain financial ratios that measure the company's growth, profitability, financial balance and liquidity.
Skills and abilities
  • Analyze and evaluate a company's financial results, financial position and financing
  • Apply different business valuation models and perform basic valuation of a company
  • Apply Excel as a tool for financial analysis

Judgement and approach.

  • Know the advantages and disadvantages of different valuation models
  • To be able to propose improving measures based on a financial analysis of a company's position
  • Present a financial analysis of a company to a group


Content

The course includes methods and tools for accounting and external analysis and valuation. Lectures and exercises are interspersed with project work where the theoretical knowledge is applied in practice. The course includes: - Basic economic concepts - Balance sheet - Income statement - Cash flow analysis - Financing - Financial key figures - Company valuation - Competitor & industry analysis - Calculation of risk versus financial structure ("leverage formula") - Total analysis of profitability ("du Pont model") conducts project work in groups where a company is studied with regard to: - The company's economic development and position - Technology development, industry dynamics and structure in a historical perspective - The studied company's activities with regard to business concept, products and technology, markets, organization and external influencing factors .

Organisation

The course content consists of lectures and exercises. Students also carry out a project. The lectures introduce and exemplify essential terms and theoretical models. The exercises are used to deepen the basic understanding of the theoretical models and to provide the students with skill sets.

Examination including compulsory elements

The course is examined by a written examination and a project. The grades are set based on the result of the written examination. Grades U (=failed), 3-5 are used.

The course examiner may assess individual students in other ways than what is stated above if there are special reasons for doing so, for example if a student has a decision from Chalmers on educational support due to disability.
