Course specific prerequisites

The course is compulsory for students on the master's program Supply Chain Management. Other students may be admitted if there are available seats. Admission will then be decided on a case-by-case basis. Applicants must have studied courses in Logistics, Transport or Supply Chain Management.

Aim

The aim of the course is to characterise, critically analyse and evaluate systems producing freight transport services in different contexts. The freight transports are to be analysed from different perspectives such as technical, operational, managerial and policy in order to support sustainable freight transport systems.

Learning outcomes (after completion of the course the student should be able to)

  • explain basic technical and operational freight transport terms and concepts
  • combine technical components and operational concepts into freight transport systems
  • characterise the traffic modes road, rail, sea, and air as well as combinations of them
  • understand what an appropriate transport service is for a specific transport demand
  • analyse the roles and interests of different stakeholders in the freight transport system
  • review the trends and challenges for the freight transport industry
  • match quantitative freight transport analysis tools with specific problems
  • solve basic route planning and transport allocation problems quantitatively

Content

The course consists of lectures and seminars covering the following areas:
  • Overview of freight transports systems, trends and challenges
  • Transport modes - technical and operational aspects including physical capacity utilisation of different transport modes
  • Terminals - operation and role in the transport system
  • Transport and environment 
  • Sustainable transport solutions
  • Transport actors perspective and digitalization
  • Demand for freight transport services and market segments
  • Planning and system design - overview and use of quantitative tools

Organisation

In line with the teaching objectives of the whole programme, the course includes a mix of practical and theoretical aspects, lectures, guest lectures from industry, site visits, assignment and seminars.

Literature

Textbooks and journal articles will be used. An up-dated literature list is announced on the course web page before the course starts.

Examination including compulsory elements

Continuous assessment of learning via digital tools in the classroom during the course period; written assignments, group work and participation on seminars.

The course examiner may assess individual students in other ways than what is stated above if there are special reasons for doing so, for example if a student has a decision from Chalmers on educational support due to disability.
