Course specific prerequisites

The course LSP310 Communication and professional development or a corresponding course.

Aim

The engineering competence component of the course aims to make students aware of the competencies needed for future studies and professional life and to strengthen their ability to reflect on preparing for working life and/or future studies.

The communication for IT part of the course aims to develop a variety of critical thinking skills that are necessary for effective communication in professional and academic contexts. The goal is to develop reading, writing, and communicative strategies that can be transferred to other contexts (and languages).

Learning outcomes (after completion of the course the student should be able to)

  • Analyze, read critically and summarize different types of academic and professional written genres.
  • Apply their knowledge of different types of academic and professional written genres to produce a text that critically summarizes a topic relevant to their studies.
  • Provide constructive feedback to others, and communicate clearly and effectively their work in speech
  • On completion of the element "engineer's competence" the student will have developed a picture of his/her own professional strengths and weaknesses and based on this will have planned how he/she should prepare himself/herself for working life.

Content

The course has two parts: communication for IT in English and engineering competence.

The course's communication in English for IT part aims to increase students' understanding of different genres of communication in their discipline, both academic and professional. For this reason, the course includes activities such as reading and analyzing the subject's relevant scientific texts (for example, conference papers), overview and practice of effective rhetorical structures in writing, peer review, and reflection for planning and self-assessment. The course requires students to apply this knowledge by producing a text that critically reviews and summarizes a discipline-relevant topic and argues for a point of view, and by giving feedback to others.

The engineering competence part of the course contains several different tasks: a reflective portfolio, workshops, lectures, and a study visit. Exercises around the individual's strengths, skills, and experiences are completed individually, though group discussion helps guide students. A study visit is followed by an oral presentation in groups.

Organisation

The course is organized into seminars, workshops, and lectures. Students will complete a text and a presentation in groups but will also complete individual tasks. The course goes over LP3 and LP4 in the spring semester. Most class sessions will be held in LP3, with several assignments due in LP4 to provide students with sufficient time to complete them. The course is run in English.

Literature

Relevant literature will be assigned during the course, including self-selected secondary sources. Lecture materials, links to readings, and other aids will be published on the course website on Canvas.

Examination including compulsory elements

Engineering competence: compulsory workshop activities, reflective portfolio, and presentation (2.2 credits, U-G) Communication for IT: compulsory prewriting, drafting, and peer review assignments (1.5 credits, U-G); compulsory written text and workbook (3.8 credits, U-3-4-5)

The course examiner may assess individual students in other ways than what is stated above if there are special reasons for doing so, for example if a student has a decision from Chalmers on educational support due to disability.
