Aim

The aim of the course is to enhance students' understanding of academic and professional genres of communication in their discipline, and their ability to apply this knowledge to communicate effectively in English both in writing and speech, preparing them for future professional and academic contexts.

Learning outcomes (after completion of the course the student should be able to)

  • Analyze, read critically and summarize different types of academic and professional written genres.
  • Apply their knowledge of different types of academic and professional written genres to produce a text that critically summarizes a topic relevant to their studies.
  • Provide constructive feedback to others, and communicate clearly and effectively their work in speech
  • On completion of the element "engineer's competence" the student will have developed a picture of his/her own professional strengths and weaknesses and based on this will have planned how he/she should prepare himself/herself for working life.

Content

The course has two parts. The first part is English communication, the second part is Engineering competence.

The English part of the course aims at developing a variety of critical thinking skills that are essential for effective communication in professional and academic contexts. The goal is to develop reading, writing, and communicative strategies that can be transferred to other contexts and languages. For this reason, the course comprises activities such as guided reading and analysis of discipline-relevant academic texts (for example conference papers, bachelor essays), overview and practice of effective argumentative and rhetorical structures in writing, peer review, and reflection for planning and self-assessment. The course requires students to apply these skills in writing and in speech, by producing a text that critically summarises a discipline-relevant topic and argues for a point of view, and by orally presenting this work and giving feedback to others.

Engineering Competence consists of the following components; career planning in group, seminars/workshops and a study-visit. Career planning is intended to create student reflection about students' role. This is attained through individual and group training sessions to identify individual strengths and weaknesses, values, abilities and valuable experiences. Work-life meetings are arranged in seminars/workshops and in a small group study-visit to an industrial IT-engineer. The study-visit is to be documented in a written paper and a PowerPoint presentation. Finally students are required to reflect on their own career plans and couple them to the study visit.

Organisation

The course is organized into seminars, workshops, and lectures.
The course has two parts and covers two study periods in the Spring. The first part is English communication which as sessions moslty in Term 3; the second part is Engineering competence, with sessions mostly in Term 4.
