Aim

The purpose of the course is to make it possible for the student to complete his or hers technical education with knowledges and competences in subjects that are related to leadership and personal development and to prepare for a successful working life. The purpose is also to be an electable but not mandatory continuation of the study preparing moments in the introduction course in the first year and to be a good preparation for the thesis work and projects in the third year of study.

Learning outcomes (after completion of the course the student should be able to)

The student should after the course have increased their knowledge, understanding and skills in a number of areas that have connections to leadership and personal development. This includes mainly areas such as project management, presentation techniques, stress management, mental training, creativity, self-esteem, intercultural communication, and tools for personal development. The course is strongly preparing for the working life.

Content

The course is organized around four independent but interrelated parts (1) lectures, (2 ) mandatory literature, (3) exercises and (4) an own work that is and presented orally and in writing. The four parts are briefly described below:

Some of the lectures are Guest Lectures with experts om different areas of the subject : Guest lectures cover different parts of the topics that are described under the heading of learning outcomes, including creativity, project leading, stress management, conflict resolution, positive psychology and different aspects of the engineer's professional role.

Mandatory literature: The required reading deals with the same topics as the guest lectures, but otherwise it has no direct link to these. The required reading is intended primarily for self-study.

Exercises: Group exercises consists among other things of workshops (which deals with various topics in the course), exercises in presentation skills and mini-lectures in selected topics.

Own work:  Each student will choose a theme to be individually studied and reported both orally and in writing. This work includes typical to read one additional book on the chosen theme and to seek additional information on the topic on various websites. The oral presentations are made for the other students in the group. Examples of themes that can be selected within one's own work is: rhetoric, stress management, intercultural communication, positive psychology, self-esteem, mental training, creativity, various aspects of the brain, leadership (different aspects), coaching, personal effectiveness , career planning, study skills, mindfulness, cognitive science, etc. The theme as well as the books that are chosen for the own work must be approved by the teacher.

Literature in the field of leadership / personal development (the titles will be announced shortly before the start of the course).

Examination including compulsory elements

The examination consists of three parts: 1. Mandatory participation in most of the guest lectures and exercises. 2. Exam with essay questions and quizzes on the required reading. 3. Approved written reports and presentations. Grading TH - Five, Four, Three, Fail

The course examiner may assess individual students in other ways than what is stated above if there are special reasons for doing so, for example if a student has a decision from Chalmers on educational support due to disability.
