Aim

This course will teach students an advanced topic in biomedical engineering. The specific topic of the course will vary between years.

Learning outcomes (after completion of the course the student should be able to)

  • describe state of the art in the sub-area of biomedical engineering selected for study
  • show a deeper knowledge in the sub-area of biomedical engineering selected for study
  • read and review research papers in an effective way.
  • critically analyze the content of the paper and evaluate its significance, importance and relevance to the research field.
  • perform independent literature review: Given a scientific problem in the sub-area, the student should be able to find the most relevant papers in the professional literature, review and analyze them.
  • independently perform a research prestudy, in the form of a literature study or a limited research assignment. Independently analyze the results from the study and value the potential for the proposed research project.
  • for bioengineering major, analyze the sub-area with a clear biological or biotechnical focus, i.e. address the chemistry, structure or function of cells, tissues or whole organisms.

Content

All projects contain:
  • Literature review
  • Project work within the sub-area
  • Written report
  • Oral presentation of project

The specific content in each sub-area will vary.

Organisation

Sub-areas that will be studied in the course will be introduced in lectures.
Each student will study one sub-area in biomedical engineering. The aim is to learn and deepen the knowledge in this field. The studies will be organized in the form of project work, and includes reviewing an analyzing the literature. Supervision will be given. The work will be made in groups of 1-2 students and each project should be reported in a written report and presented in a workshop.

Literature

The course material is different for each sub-area.
Relevant course material will be introduced during the first introductory lecture.

It is possible, after agreeing with the examiner, to define and to conduct a self defined project. Appropriate supervisor must be available, and in the case of self-defined projects, it is the student's responsibility to ensure that.

Examination including compulsory elements

The grading will be based on the written project report and the oral presentation.

The course examiner may assess individual students in other ways than what is stated above if there are special reasons for doing so, for example if a student has a decision from Chalmers on educational support due to disability.
