SSY033 - Basic electric power circuits

In more detail, that means that the student should have knowledge in...
- The concepts of DC voltage, AC voltage, applied voltage, voltage across components, currents, resistance and electromagnetic effect.
- Electrical circuits (in series and parallell).
- Ohm's and Kirchhoff's laws.

Furthermore students are presumed to know how to work with algebraic expressions.

Aim

This course aims to provide students with an understanding of the function and use of electrical, electronic, pneumatic and hydraulic components relevant to the field of marine engineering. Furthermore, the course will provide fundamental insight into and knowledge of the methods and systems that occur in the control of processes, machines and other installations. The course will also provide skills in interpreting and constructing drawings of electrical, pneumatic and hydraulic systems, and in interpreting and constructing control programs for controlling processes with programmable controllers.

Learning outcomes (after completion of the course the student should be able to)

- Interpret and formulate logical conditions in the form of logical expressions, logical diagrams and relay schedules. - Describe the usual electrical and electronic components and concepts used in the control of industrial and marine equipment. - Describe the most common components that are included in pneumatic systems. - Describe the most common components that are included in hydraulic systems. - Interpret and construct schedules for industrial- and marine facilities. - Interpret and construct schedules for simple pneumatic controls. - Interpret and construct schedules for simple hydraulic controls. - Describe the structure and function of industrial programmable logic controllers, PLC. - Develop, complement and troubleshoot PLC control program for the interlocks and sequence controls. - Know the meaning of the feedback control system. - Describe the usual electrical and electronic components and concepts used in the control of industrial and marine equipment this includes control of interior systems

Content

- Basic digital technology, logical expression, truth table. - Components included in the interface between electronic controllers and power supplies, relays, contactors, switching transistors, optocouplers. - Components included in the electrical installation schedules. - Relay technology, Ladder diagrams, electrical installation schedules. - Pneumatics: components and systems. - Hydraulics: components and systems. - Programmable logic controllers (PLC) hardware and programming. - Interlocks, time functions, counters. - Ladder and function block programming of the PLC. - Control of sequential processes. - Analogue signals, A / D, D / A conversion. - Introduction of basic feedback control systems.

Organisation

The course consists of lectures, homework assignments, laboratory work and exercises. Much of work will be done two and two with focus on assignments, laboratory work and exercises. Homework assignments and laboratory work are mandatory. There will be about two lectures a week that focus on in-depth understanding of the course content. The course contains learning objectives for the STCW A-III / 6 (Electro Technical Officer) competence.
