Aim

The course aims at providing general safety knowledge about the physical and electrical foundations behind electric power. It shall also give an understanding about and knowledge of functioning and construction of electrical appliances and systems in use in the modern industrial and energy sectors. The course should also provide knowledge on the reasons behind damages and injuries from electric currents.

Learning outcomes (after completion of the course the student should be able to)

The electrical safety test covers the following learning outcomes
1. Explain how to avoid electric damage from an electrical safety perspective in a laborative environment.

The examination part A covers the following learning outcomes
2. Describe and model ideal components such as resistors, DC voltage sources and DC current sources.
3. Describe and apply Ohm's Law, Kirchoff's laws, power law, energy calculation, mesh analysis, superposition in DC circuits.
4. Model electrical DC circuits using equivalent Thevenin circuits.
5. Draw circuit diagram for electrical DC circuits.
6. Calculate current, voltage, resistance, power and energy in DC circuits.
7. Describe the material concepts resistivity and temperature coefficient as well as be able to use them in electrical calculations.
8. Describe how batteries and accumulators are constructed and how they are modeled, as well as calculate voltages and currents that occur in these components.

The examination part B covers the following learning outcomes
9. Describe and model ideal components such as capacitors, inductors (coils), resistors, transformers, AC voltage sources and AC current sources.
10. Describe and apply Ohm's Law, Kirchoff's laws, the complex method, power law, energy calculation, mesh analysis, superposition in AC circuits.
11. Model electrical AC circuits using equivalent Thevenin circuits.
12. Draw circuit diagram for electrical AC circuits.
13. Calculate voltages, currents, impedances, phase shift, apparent, active and reactive power and energy in single-phase AC circuits.

The examination part C specifically covers the following learning outcomes, but also the learning outcomes from parts A and B
14. Describe the DC machine's structure, function, and behavior during dynamics. Modeling and perform calculations on the DC machine in steady-state.
15. Calculate voltages, currents, impedances, phase shift, apparent, active and reactive power and energy in three-phase AC circuits.
16. Describe the transformer's structure, function and behavior during dynamics. Modeling and perform calculations on the transformer in steady-state.
17. Describe how grounded and insulated electrical systems, protective earth and residual current device works and describe the concept of earth.

The laboratory part D specifically covers the following learning outcomes, but also the learning outcomes from parts A, B and C
18. Use simple troubleshooting in DC and AC circuits.

Examination including compulsory elements

The examination of parts A, B and C is based on written examination with grading scale U, 3, 4, 5. The examination of part D takes place during the laboratory exercises, grading scale U, G. An approved electrical safety test is required to be able to do the laboratory work. For the final grade it is required that no part (A, B, C or D) is failed and when it is fulfilled, the final grade is determined as a weighing of parts A, B and C.

The course examiner may assess individual students in other ways than what is stated above if there are special reasons for doing so, for example if a student has a decision from Chalmers on educational support due to disability.
