Ship management is part of certification of competence, based on the requirements of the STCW. The purpose of the course is to highlight the conditions for creating adequate security for ships, people and the environment as well as protection against criminal attacks on the business and the ship, based on the legal requirements that exist in broad sense for maritime safety.Learning outcomes (after completion of the course the student should be able to)
- Describe the relevant organizations, conventions, EU regulations and the applicable Swedish rules on maritime safety relating to ship safety, personal safety, maritime security.- Explain the basic maritime legal conditions, definitions, concepts and principles of responsibility.
- Apply basic maritime rules.
- Apply and explain the rules for environmental protection.
- Describe and understand systematic work and its starting points in the application of the ISM Code for protection against accidents and the ISPS Code for protection against criminal attacks.
- Account for civil matters of importance for maritime activities (LM 6).
- Have a good understanding of the risks and threats that shipping is exposed to and how sustainability can be applied on in maritime safety work.
- Clarifying rules on employment law and the fundamentals of the regulations related to work environment.
Content
The content of the course covers laws and regulations concerning:- Ship, ship owners and shipping companies, shipowners' liability.
- Maritime safety, the safety of ships and maritime security.
- Environmental protection, environmental responsibility, maritime and sustainable development.
- Seafarer's right, the master and his criminal liability.
- Collisions, salvage, general average.
- Maritime transport agreement, general cargo, chartering, cargo liability.
- Marine insurance.
