Aim

The aim of this course is to provide general knowledge about sea transportation of dangerous goods, as well as knowledge about multi modal transportation of dangerous goods. The course provides the theoretical knowledge required to act as cargo responsible on board vessels loading, off-loading and transporting dangerous goods in packaged form and in non-liquid bulk. Approved course together with approved fire fighting course provides the foundation for working with dangerous goods on board dry cargo vessels accoring to 3 kap. 5 § förordning (2007:237) om behörigheter för sjöpersonal.

Learning outcomes (after completion of the course the student should be able to)

- Explain what dangerous goods is show knowledge of the classification criteria
- Explain how dangerous goods should be packed for shipping
- Determine how dangerous goods must be documented in order to be accepted for carriage
- Apply the requirements of the dangerous goods to be stowed on board
- Apply the requirements of the hazardous materials to be separated on board with regard to the type of transport and ship
- Relate to national laws and international conventions on maritime transport of dangerous goods
- Describe the emergency response to incidents and accidents involving dangerous goods on board ships

- Classification of dangerous goods
- Stowage of dangerous goods on board ships
- Separation of dangerous goods on board ships
- Requirements for packaging for dangerous goods
- Declaration of hazardous and other transport documents
- Emergency measures in case of accidents and incidents

Organisation

The course consists of lectures and exercises. Attendance at compulsory modules required. The course ends with a written exam.

Examination including compulsory elements

Written exam comprising learning outcomes 1-7. To pass, 80% correct answer is needed on the final exam.
Mandatory attendance at all lectures and exercises.
