  • Self-study (assignments/quizzes).
  • Self-training/student-led training in GMDSS simulator.
  • Maritime standard phrases and concepts (SMCP)*.
  • Instructor-led simulator sessions in GMDSS/RADIO*.
(*mandatory components where attendance is recorded and forms the basis for examination)

The practical exercises of the course take place in a radio simulator.

Organisation

The course begins with an introductory lecture that precedes other learning activities. Furthermore, a series of lectures and assignments are provided with the aim of giving the student depth, breadth, and detailed knowledge to successfully carry out practical exercises.

The practical exercises of the course take place in a radio simulator.

As the course heavily relies on self-study, it is necessary for students to prepare for simulator exercises since instructor-led simulator training is strictly scheduled.

Examination including compulsory elements

The 3.0 credits for the course are divided into 2 parts:
  • Exam, Part A: 1,5 credits
  • Exercises, Part B: 1,5 credits
Exam, Part A; assessed through:
  • Digital exam combined with assignments (learning objectives L1, L2, L3, L4, L5).
Note that exam registration is done through the exam administration within the timeframe determined by the administration. No deviations from this will be offered in the form of extra exam opportunities or deviations from the central booking order.

Exercises, Part B; assessed through:
  • Participation in all mandatory components (learning objectives L2, L3, L4, L5).
  • Practical radio examination in the simulator (learning objectives L2, L3, L5).
The practical examination takes place individually in the radio simulator with the responsible teacher. At this time, the student's ability to handle the equipment correctly, convey information using standardized words and phrases in clear and concise English, and act according to standard procedures are evaluated. The examination takes about 30 minutes and is scheduled by the student themselves during the course's immediate conclusion. Available dates are communicated at least two weeks in advance.

Examination in Part A, Part B, and elements in subsequent courses (Safety and Security Officer) meet the knowledge requirements outlined in ERC decision (99)01 Annex 2.

The course examiner may assess individual students in other ways than what is stated above if there are special reasons for doing so, for example if a student has a decision from Chalmers on educational support due to disability.
