Aim

The aim of the course is to provide students with the theoretical knowledge and practical skills required to act as a radio operator in the maritime safety system GMDSS in accordance with STCW 2010.

The course will also provice sufficient knowledge of English for ship officer's to be able to use charts and appropriate nautical publications, receive and interpret information and messages concerning ship's safety and operation and to express her- or himself clearly in conversations with ships and shore stations, which includes communication according to the IMO recommended standards and accepted vocabulary.

Learning outcomes (after completion of the course the student should be able to)

(L1) Describe safety communication from a maritime perspective.
(L2) Explain the structure, subsystems and the use of the Global Maritime Distress and Safety System (GMDSS)
(L3) Explain the structure and usage of radio communication during ship operations.
(L4) Discuss the history, application and importance of IMO:s Standard Marine Communication Phrases.
(L5) Apply subsystems within the Global Maritime Distress and Safety System (GMDSS) in order to be able to transmit and receive distress, urgency and safety messages.
(L6) In a clear and structured way apply correct terminology (IAMSAR) when communicating with ships or other entities, especially distress, urgency and safety messages using IMO:s Standard Marine Communication Phrases.

Content

In this course, Global Maritime Distress and Safety System (GMDSS) and the various radio communication equipment required for sea area A1 is introduced. Through simulation training and real ship radio equipment, students get the opportunity to practice handling and are given understanding of systems with respect to safety and general communications in the GMDSS. This course is geared mainly at vessels sailing in the so-called neighbouring areas (coastal shipping) corresponding to Restricted Operator Certificate (ROC).

Literature and manuals are written in English. Lectures are given in Swedish. Radio communication is made in English.

Organisation

The education is divided in a series of lectures and with exercises in the radio simulator and in the language laboratory. All exercises are mandatory.

A major part of the course is based on studies outside of the class room and includes reading, preparation for the exercises and the possibility to use the radio simulator in order to train skills

Examination including compulsory elements

Part A: Radio simulation and language exercises. All exercises are mandatory and examines learning objectives L5 and L6.
Part B: Written examination. Examines learning objectives L1, L2, L3 and L4.

The course examiner may assess individual students in other ways than what is stated above if there are special reasons for doing so, for example if a student has a decision from Chalmers on educational support due to disability.
