Aim

The aim of the course is to give the students the theoretical knowledge in ship stability and ship construction needed for safely handling a ship in accordance with STCW 95 with amendments. The course shall give the students the ability to understand ship stability in a way that a ship and its relevant equipment is used in a safe and functional manner.

Learning outcomes (after completion of the course the student should be able to)

1- Describe the fundamentals of ship stability
2- Execute the calculations required for determining a ship's stability
3- Describe the forces and stresses affecting a ship's hull
4- Describe a ship's design and principal dimensions

Content

- Ship's design, principal dimensions
- Forces, momentum- and center of gravity calculations
- Transverse stability
- Initial stability, metacenter and metacentric height
- Free surface momentum
- Longitudinal stability
- Hydrostatic particulars
- Shear force, bending moments

Organisation

The course consists of lectures and exercises. The course ends with a written exam.

Literature

Ship Stability, van Dokkum, K. et al., DOKMAR, 6th edition. 2018

Examination including compulsory elements

Intended learning outcomes 1-4 are examined trough written examination

Aids at the examination
- Approved calculator
- Formulas
- Abstract, ship hydrostatics

The course examiner may assess individual students in other ways than what is stated above if there are special reasons for doing so, for example if a student has a decision from Chalmers on educational support due to disability.
