Aim

The course aims to provide in-depth knowledge in risk- and safety management to achieve economic, environmental and social sustainability goals within transport and operational management. For this, the course combines theory in risk and safety management with practical application of risk assessment methods, risk management systems, and risk culture. Moreover, the course aims to provide knowledge about risk concepts, the relationship between security requirement and risk management, assessment of probability- and consequences, preventive measures, preparation- and contingency planning and the society abilities to resist accidents. Finally, the course aims to provide knowledge in oral presentation and opposition of a project.

Learning outcomes (after completion of the course the student should be able to)

Having passed the course the student should be able to:
  • Describe basic concepts within risk and safety management;
  • Describe a risk management system based on risk culture and work processes;
  • Apply risk management methods and tools in identification, assessment, analysis of risks;
  • Apply structured approach in decision making within risky situations;
  • Explain the influence of regulatory guidelines on risk- and safety;
  • Explain the complexity of risk- and safety management based on a systems approach;
  • Identify the need for further knowledge and practical skills to improve safety and sustainability. 

Content

The course deals with the following:

  • Theories in risk and safety management.
  • Application of standards in risk management and safety management
  • Methods and tools for assessment, identification, analysis and assessment of risks.
  • Methodology for preventing, identifying and reducing risks.
  • Qualitative and quantitative methods for risk assessment.
  • Risk management tools for communication and improvement in risk management.

Organisation

The course is organized based on a problem-oriented pedagogy and consists of:
  • Lectures and guest lectures (mandatory): Provides theoretical basis and support for project work and exams
  • Workshop (mandatory): For practical application and theoretical knowledge when using risk and safety standards.
  • Project (mandatory): For practical application of acquired theory in risk and safety management from a sustainable transport perspective. To ensure knowledge in the presentation and opposition scientific report based on project results to stakeholders.
  • Written exam (mandatory): For evaluation and control of acquired knowledge within the course.
  • Study visit (mandatory)

Examination including compulsory elements

Project based examination, which includes written project report, presentation, opposition, workshop and a written exam. The students must be approved on all individual examination forms to pass the course. 

The course examiner may assess individual students in other ways than what is stated above if there are special reasons for doing so, for example if a student has a decision from Chalmers on educational support due to disability.
