Knowledge and skills corresponding to the learning outcomes of the following courses:

SJM001 Nautical mathematics
SJM005 Terrestrial navigation and seamanship
SJM020 Meteorology and oceanography

Aim

To provide knowledge on ocean navigation, especially in astronomical navigation, great circle navigation and weather routing.

Learning outcomes (after completion of the course the student should be able to)

- Calculate position and compass corrections with celestial bodies.
- Use weather routing software.
- Plan an ocean passage due to time, weather forecast and statistics.
- Calculate Great Circle routes.

Content

Astronomical navigation
Navigational history and theory, repetition of earth's coordinate system, spherical trigonometry, time calculation, lines of position (LOP) and compass corrections.

Great Circle navigation
Spherical trigonometry, coordination system, rhumbline, greate circle navigation, vertex, combined GC/RL.

Weather routing/passage planning
Weather charts, weather routing software, areas with ice, ocean passage

Organisation

The course consists of lectures, exercises and project assignments, and mandatory tests at an e-learning platform.
