Aim
The lectures are intended to prepare students for their on board training and provide students with the necessary knowledge of life at sea in order to adequately be able to assimilate the on board training. The on board training aims to educate / train students in the practical skills of previously obtained theoretical knowledge in operating conditions aboard merchant vessels in accordance with the requirements of the STCW Convention and to obtain the time at sea required by Swedish Transport Agency (TSFS 2011:116) to obtain certificate as deck officer.Learning outcomes (after completion of the course the student should be able to)
General learning outcome for all on board training
- Mastering such practical knowledge, experience and skills necessary to serve as an officer on a merchant vessel
After completion of this course, the student should be able to:
- Steer the ship by given orders, both in English and Swedish
- Fulfil duties as look-out
- Use life saving and fire fighting equipment
- Describe shipping impacts on the marine environment and to apply measures to protect the marine environment
- Demonstrate basic knowledge of deck maintenance and apply safe working practices including the use of personal protective devices
Perform tasks related to mooring, unmooring, anchoring, connection of tugboat
- Perform tasks related to the rigging of the ship's accommodation ladder, gangway and pilot ladders
- Demonstrate basic knowledge of "Ship security awareness"
- Demonstrate basic knowledge of cargo handling, cargo securing and ballast
- Describe and document a work process (Swedish)
