Course specific prerequisites

Should have at least 120 days of on board training with a technical profile.

Aim

The aim of the course is for the student to gain a basic understanding of the group-individual-leader interaction and factors that affect this interaction.

Learning outcomes (after completion of the course the student should be able to)

- Describe basic human physical & mental abilities and limitations especially with regard to activities on ships 
- Describe group dynamics and conditions for collective action 
- Explain how leadership is framed in formal organizations 
- Explain the meanings of leadership theories and the relationship to the executive role. 
- Explain basic gender aspects and privilege structures 
- Explain the concept of psychological safety and its connection to physical safety and efficiency at work. 
- Describe cultural aspects of leadership. 
- Explain different action logics depending on the degree of predictability in the situation 
- Explain possible ethical dilemmas in organizations 
- Explain labor law legislation and the structure and sources of labor law 
- Explain the form and function of the employment contract

Content

- Structural perspective on Leadership: goals, functions, division, responsibilities, division of work, types of organization etc. - Situational perspective on leadership: the relevance of different action logics depending on the degree of uncertainty in the situation. - The political perspective on leadership: power, resource allocation, status hunt, internal conflicts, the boss as a politician, ethical dilemmas etc.

Organisation

The course is a continuation course in leadership and takes its starting point in the collective action and the importance of a situational leadership. In the course there will be several different elements; lectures, exercises, and role play. The central form of work will be the seminar where the student is expected to prepare before by taking take part of a specific material (text, video or pod) and write a reflective text on the topic that is submitted before the seminar where it is discussed. Great emphasis will be placed on the art of reasoning based on specific premises. In the seminars, the sudent will be approved if the student has presented the material and put a personal reflection on it. The reflection does not have to be in line with the teacher's opinion on the issue if the argument for the position is well substantiated and opinions and premises can be clearly distinguished.
