          Eligibility

          General entry requirements for bachelor's level (first cycle)
          Applicants enrolled in a programme at Chalmers where the course is included in the study programme are exempted from fulfilling the requirements above.

          Course specific prerequisites

          Has a valid certificate for Basic Safety Training.

          Has a valid medical certificate for seafarers, and have completed 55 credits within the program according to decision C 2018-0351.

          Exceptions to the prerequisites can be made after a special review.

          Aim

          The lectures are intended to prepare students for their on board training and provide students with the necessary knowledge of life at sea in order to adequately be able to assimilate the on board training. The on board training aims to educate / train students in the practical skills of previously obtained theoretical knowledge in operating conditions aboard merchant vessels in accordance with the requirements of the STCW Convention and to obtain the time at sea required by Swedish Transport Agency (TSFS 2011:116) to obtain certificate as an engineer officer.

          Learning outcomes (after completion of the course the student should be able to)

          General learning outcome for all on board training
          - Mastering such practical knowledge, experience and skills necessary to serve as an officer on a merchant vessel

          After completion of this course, the student should be able to:
          - Describe a vessel's particulars - Use and apply various distress signals, emergency and safety procedures
          - Demonstrate knowledge of "Ship security awareness"
          - Describe 3rd engine officer's routine and maintenance duties
          - Describe the vessel's main engine and surrounding systems
          - Describe the vessel's auxiliary engine and surrounding systems
          - Demonstrate knowledge of the boiler
          - Demonstrate knowledge of the vessel's separators
          - Demonstrate knowledge of the vessel's hydralic systems
          - Demonstrate knowledge of the vessel's fresh water generator and surrounding systems
          - describe, investigate and reflect upon management issues on board, with regard to relevant requirements of the future professional role. 

          Content

          - Lecture, in order to prepare the student for future on board training
          - On board training, approximatly 10 weeks

          Communication
          Oral presentation of written  trainee report addressing relevant management issues on board.

          Organisation

          This course is the third of four with on board training. This course is held during lp 2 and the period at sea is usually 10 weeks. Prior to the course (lp 1), lectures can be held to prepare students for future on board training.

          Assessment take place during lp 3 when students individually or in group meet examiner.

          In addition to course specific prerequisites, student is required in a timely manner take part of SUIs guidelines, acquiring the necessary documentation such as a seaman discharge book, if necessary, apply for a Visa, etc.

          - Completed at least 57 days of on board training - Shown completed, signed and stamped Cadet Report, paragraph 7 and 8 at least "yes" or "Partly".
          - Assessment report (competence of STCW requirements) of the On Board Training Manual is dated and signed by the supervisor.

          The course examiner may assess individual students in other ways than what is stated above if there are special reasons for doing so, for example if a student has a decision from Chalmers on educational support due to disability.
