          Applicants enrolled in a programme at Chalmers where the course is included in the study programme are exempted from fulfilling the requirements above.

          Course specific prerequisites

          Has a valid certificate for Basic Safety Training.

          Has a valid medical certificate for seafarers.

          Aim

          The lectures are intended to prepare students for their on board training and provide students with the necessary knowledge of life at sea in order to adequately be able to assimilate the on board training. The on board training aims to educate / train students in the practical skills of previously obtained theoretical knowledge in operating conditions aboard merchant vessels in accordance with the requirements of the STCW Convention and to obtain the time at sea required by Swedish Transport Agency (TSFS 2011:116) to obtain certificate as an engineer officer.

          Learning outcomes (after completion of the course the student should be able to)

          General learning outcome for all on board training
          - Mastering such practical knowledge, experience and skills necessary to serve as an officer on a merchant vessel

          After completion of this course, the student should be able to:
          - Describe vessel's particular - Use the vessel's life-saving and fire-fighting equipment -
           Describe shipping impacts on the marine environment and to apply measures to protect the marine environment
          - Demonstrate basic knowledge of "Ship security awareness"
          - Demonstrate basic knowledge of maintenance work in the engine and apply safe working practices including the use of personal protective devices
          - Describe engine room watch keeping procedures
          - Use the vessel's internal communication
          - Demonstrate the ability to receive and follow orders given in English and Swedish
          - Show basic knowledge of handling dangerous goods
          - Show basic knowledge of the organization and the terminology used on board
          - Explain how the ship's Emergency steering and control of main engine - Describe common deck work

          Content

          - Lecture, in order to prepare the student for future on borad training
          - On board training, approximatly 5-10 weeks
          - Report writing of relevance for the trainee period.

          Organisation

          This course is the first of four ships with on board training. This course is held lp 3 and the period at sea can be anywhere from 5 to 10 weeks. Prior to the course (lp 1 & lp 2) held a number of lectures to prepare students for future on board training.

          Assessment take place during the lp 4 when students individually or in group meet examiner.

          The report is written in accordance with the guidelines on the course website.

          In addition to course specific prerequisites, student is required in a timely manner take part of SUIs guidelines, acquiring the necessary documentation such as a seaman discharge book, if necessary, apply for a Visa, etc.

          - Assessment report (competence of STCW requirements) of the On Board Training Manual is dated and signed by the supervisor.

          0312, Part C
          - Completed at least 57 days of on board training - Shown completed, signed and stamped Cadet Report, paragraph 7 and 8 at least "yes" or "Partly".
          - Assessment report (competence of STCW requirements) of the On Board Training Manual is dated and signed by the supervisor.

          The course examiner may assess individual students in other ways than what is stated above if there are special reasons for doing so, for example if a student has a decision from Chalmers on educational support due to disability.
