Should have at least 5 months of on board training with a technical profile, or have equivalent competence.Aim
The course aims at broadening the students knowledge of; operational use of ship machinery, troubleshooting of ship machinery, as well as operating costs. The student will in accordance with STCW Code have his or her competences tested in the engine room simulator.Learning outcomes (after completion of the course the student should be able to)
- Apply to operational service and troubleshooting in a ship machinery systems including auxilary systems- Identify the different elements necessary to a maintenance work to be carried out in a safe, sustainable and economical manner, and taking into account the operating conditions for the vessle.
- Plan the daily operation of a complex machine systems in a merchant navy vessel.
- Evaluate the different operating conditions of a ship's machinery and make relevant actions of how the operating affect the environment, economy and maintenance aspects.
- Categorize malfunctions in a engine system and explain how they can influence the operation of the ship from a security perspective.
- Comparing different operating economic case for a ship and how different the parameter that controls the operation affects the economic parameters.
- Propose measures and changes for operating the propulsion of a ship.
- Plan and structure an oral presentation within the course's main tasks
- Write and structure reports in English so that the report describes in a clear and coherent way of the problem / task
- Evaluated the commercial part of operating costs for diesel engines
- Plan maintenance work for a ship at a shipyard
STCW A-III/6
- Apply an understanding of the control system function and how a regulators different parameters affecting a diesel engine under normal operating conditions.
Content
- Operational management and troubleshooting of a ship machinery systems in a engine room simulator of both type crosshead engine and trunk engine.- Preparation and start-up of vessels machine checklist and connecting of shaft generators for a safe propulsion of the ship.
- Laborations of how a diesel engine controller works with respect to the various functions PID.
- Laboratory of PMS (Power managment system) with switching from manual operation to automatic operation of a main bus bar for a ship.
- Analytical troubleshooting of a ship's propulsion and associated auxiliary systems and based on this conduct an analysis and how to plan maintenance and how to set up the propulsion.
- The propulsion of ships (Propulsion).
- Operating costs for ships.
- Laborations of how to restart a ship's machinery systems after a "black-out" scenario.
- Proficiency testing in operational engine room simulator that includes:
- Engine Routines
- Checklists
- Troubleshooting of machine
- Procedures in the engine control room
Organisation
The course consists of lectures, tutorials and exercises in different moments.The lectures are conventional and are carried out in lecturing hall or in the engine room simulator
Lab sessions and exercises
The students carry out all the exercises and assignments in project teams of two students. The exercises are in many cases open problems that have not been given solutions but can be solved in several ways. In the group work the students must applied to former knowledge from the previous grades. The group work is presented both orally and in writing.
The course includes mandatory laboratory in the engine room simulator in groups of two students. The labs are covered by several different stages and is referred to as "competency test " where different skills that students should have tries.
The course includes learning outcomes for the competence STCW A-III/6 (Electro Technical Officer).

Mandatory participation in the oral presentation of part 0113 and 0213 in the course as above.
The course examiner may assess individual students in other ways than what is stated above if there are special reasons for doing so, for example if a student has a decision from Chalmers on educational support due to disability.
