Course specific prerequisites

MMS140 Introduction to international logistics, or equivalent.

Aim

The course aims to provide the student with in-depth knowledge of shipping markets and the factors affecting these markets.

Learning outcomes (after completion of the course the student should be able to)

- Analyse the four shipping markets (freight market, new building market, second hand market and scrap market) and relate influencing factors to the ups and downs of market cycles, both long and short-term and seasonal fluctuations as well as temporary market shocks such as natural disasters, wars and crop failure.
- Make a prognosis for possible market development by using supply- and demand modells for shipping.
- Analyze how actors are affected in the maritime cluster in relation to maritime markets up and down turns. 
- Analyze one of the shipping markets (free choice) in relationship to UN' goals for sustainable development 5, 7, 13, 14, 15.

- Shipping markets: freight market, new building market, scrap market and sale and purchase market.
- Market cycles  and influencing factors.
- Models for supply and demand of shipping.
- Maritime cluster actors.

Organisation

1) Introductory lecture
2) Individual project with tutor meetings.
3) Presentation

Project work design will be decided upon in consultation between students and lecturer. Students are expected to take initiatives and be proactive in both the project designing and execution. The framework of the project is to reach the learning objectives of the course including elements of up-to-date market information. The selected project must be possible to present orally and in writing. Examples of project work could be to create literature on the subject that can be used on the Shipping and Logistics program, conduct market research or do a video-based lecture series.
