Course specific prerequisites
-Aim
The course provides the student with general knowledge of civil law, in particular commercial law. The course shall also raise the safety at sea by providing the student with knowledge of maritime law and national/international maritime safety work. By solving practical problems and studying the verdicts of courts the student shall get general skills in judicial problem solving.Learning outcomes (after completion of the course the student should be able to)
Juridical learning outcomes:
- explain basic legal concepts.
- resolving legal problems through legal methods.
- show basic understanding of contract law, sales law and tort law.
- show good knowledge of regulations affecting international and national shipping.
- show good knowledge of regulations related to labour law andwork environmental law.
- show good knowledge in shipping related standard conditions in ship management, ship repairs and recycling of ships.
- apply relevant regulations regarding environment and work environment.
- relate to business ethics issues.
- relate to ethical issues in relation to employment law.
Economics learning outcomes:
- explain the basic forms of charter (bareboat-, time- and voyage charter) functions and associated cost and relate how this can affect engine department, with focus on speed and bunker consumption.
- calculate a straightforward voyage result and explain its components and relate to form of charter.
- explain and reflect upon engine departments actions likely effect on voyage result.
- explain the principles of, and make an uncomplicated laytime calculation.
- explain how engine department actions can have an effect on laytime calculations with focus on notice of readiness and 'ships fault'.

The course is assessed by two examinations at separate occasions.
- Part A+B: Law. Written examination (grading TH: fail, 3, 4, 5).
- Part C: Economics. Oral examination (grading UH: pass/fail).
