Aim

The course provides the student with general knowledge of civil law, in particular commercial law. The course shall also raise the safety at sea by providing the student with knowledge of maritime law and national/international maritime safety work. By solving practical problems and studying the verdicts of courts the student shall get general skills in judicial problem solving.

Learning outcomes (after completion of the course the student should be able to)

Juridical learning outcomes

- Explain basic legal concepts.
- Resolving legal problems through legal methods.
- Apply basic rules of contract law, sales law and tort law.
- Identify maritime judicial issues.
- Show good knowledge of regulations affecting international and national shipping.
- Show good knowledge of regulations related to the environment and work environment.
- Apply relevant regulations of maritime law.
- Apply relevant regulations regarding environment and work environment.
- Relate to business ethics issues
- Relate to ethical issues in relation to employment law

Economics learning outcomes

- Explain the basic forms of charter (bareboat-, time- and voyage charter) functions and associated cost and relate how this can affect engine department, with focus on speed and bunker consumption.
- Calculate a straightforward voyage result and explain its components and relate to form of charter.
- Explain and reflect upon engine departments actions likely effect on voyage result.
- Explain the principles of, and make an uncomplicated laytime calculation.
- Explain how engine department actions can have an effect on laytime calculations with focus on notice of readiness and 'ships fault'.

- Shipowners' liability for environmental damage.
- Maritime Law with a focus on the vessel, flag, registry, liens, salvage, collision, cargo, Hague-Visby, Maritime Code Chapter 13, insurance, management, diaries, Maritime Declaration and passengers.
- National and international security law.

Examination including compulsory elements

Written examination in three parts: Part A: Civil law Part B: Maritime law Part C: Economics Part A is examined on one day and part B and C is examined on another day. The final grade is reported only once all parts of the course are passed. The final grade is decided by weighing the students score on each law exam.
