Aim

The course provides the student with general knowledge of civil law, in particular commercial law. The course shall also raise the safety at sea by providing the student with knowledge of maritime law and national/international maritime safety work. By solving practical problems and studying the verdicts of courts the student shall get general skills in judicial problem solving.

Learning outcomes (after completion of the course the student should be able to)

- Explain basic legal concepts
- Apply the legal method of resolving legal problems
- Apply basic rules of contract law, sales law and tort law
- Identify maritime issues
- Show a good knowledge of where regulations affecting shipping internationally and nationally
- Show good knowledge and be able to apply in the area where regulations within the working environment and labor laws
- Apply relevant regulations of maritime law
- Identify problems related to etichs in law, explain how to relate to etichs in relation to for example contract law

- Basic contract law
- Proxy
- The master agreement and power of attorney
- Sales law, company law, labor law and health and safety legislation
- Tort law and the Shipowners' Liability
- Shipowners' liability for environmental damage
- Maritime Law with a focus on the vessel, flag, registry, liens, salvage, collision, cargo, Hague-Visby, Maritime Code Chapter 13, general average, insurance, management, diaries, Maritime Declaration and passengers
- National and international security law

Organisation

The course consists of lectures and exercises. The course ends with a written exam.
