Eligibility

General entry requirements for bachelor's level (first cycle)
Applicants enrolled in a programme at Chalmers where the course is included in the study programme are exempted from fulfilling the requirements above.

Specific entry requirements

The same as for the programme that owns the course.
Applicants enrolled in a programme at Chalmers where the course is included in the study programme are exempted from fulfilling the requirements above.

Course specific prerequisites

Knowledge and skills corresponding to the learning outcomes of the following courses: SJO556 Ship engineering technology SJO561 Ship machinery systems SJO701 Thermodynamics and fluid mechanics

Aim

The course aims at providing knowledge about the construction, function and operation of steam generation and refrigeration plants, as well as the ability to perform thermodynamic calculations for these type of plants.

Learning outcomes (after completion of the course the student should be able to)

- Describe the construction components of different types of steam plants, as well as the function of these components
- Explain how the condition of the water / steam changes in the different parts of a steam plant
- Perform and explain thermodynamic calculations on a steam plant and its components, such as calculation of operating parameters, efficiencies, heat and electricity production, and use Mollier Diagrams for water vapor as reference in these calculations.
- Explain how different operating parameters affect the plant's efficiencies
- Describe the peripheral equipment of the steam installation, such as water treatment and safety features
- Identify and correct alarms/errors during start-up and operation of a steam system in an engine room simulator
- Describe the construction of different types of cooling and air conditioning systems, as well as the function of the components.
- Perform and justify thermodynamic calculations on refrigeration systems, such as calculation of operating parameters, cooling power and cooling factor, and use Mollier Diagram for refrigerants as reference in these calculations.
- Identify problems / errors when operating a refrigeration system and suggest measures for these problems.
- Perform and justify thermodynamic calculations on air conditioning / air treatment systems, such as calculation of cooling power and operating parameters, by using Mollier Diagrams for humid air.
- Based on a critical evaluation of relevant research, reflect on conversions, considering the advantages and disadvantages of different refrigerants.
- Effectively search for and use qualitative information in books and journals, as well as cite references correctly.
