Eligibility
General entry requirements for bachelor's level (first cycle)Applicants enrolled in a programme at Chalmers where the course is included in the study programme are exempted from fulfilling the requirements above.
Specific entry requirements
The same as for the programme that owns the course.Applicants enrolled in a programme at Chalmers where the course is included in the study programme are exempted from fulfilling the requirements above.
Course specific prerequisites
Knowledge and skills corresponding to the learning outcomes of the following courses: SJM005 Terrestrial navigation and seamanship SJM015 Collision avoidance SJM030 Advanced collision avoidance SJM060 Navigation systems.Aim
The aim of the course is to provide the student with...
- Knowledge about different vessel's maneuvering characteristics including knowledge about the controllable, semi-controllable and uncontrollable forces involved in ship handling.
- Knowledge about different propulsion and controlling arrangements.
- Skills to maneuver a ship with and without tugs in simulated and real environments.
- In-depth knowledge of various man-overboard maneuvers.
Learning outcomes (after completion of the course the student should be able to)
- Appraise the IMO's maneuvering tests and their purpose. - Explain and describe the basic hydrodynamic forces affecting a ship's hull and their effect. - Explain the forces involved in ship handling. - Assess and apply different arrangements used to control ships including their characteristics. - Practically handle ships in confined waters under various conditions in a simulated environment - Proficiency in planning passages in restricted waters on paper charts and ECDIS - Execute and monitor the vessel's safe passage with modern navigational bridge systems and tools including handling malfunctions and errors - Describe the necessary preparations and manoeuvres when taking and leaving pilot - Be proficient in communicating professionally with pilots (master pilot exchange), VTS, coast stations and other ships relating to the safe navigation of the ship - Describe and appraise the use of tug boats in maneuvering - Appraise various MOB maneuvers according to IAMSAR Vol.III. - Be proficient in the COLREGsContent
According to STCW-Code Table A-II/2: Manoeuvre and handle a ship in all conditions. The course provides lectures, simulator training and practical ship handling reflecting the theory learnt. Lectures cover the following subjects:- IMO Manoeuvring tests, manoeuvring information on board ships.
- Practical hydrodynamics and pivot point.
- Constant rate of turn, controlled turns, planning, executing and monitoring passages in restricted waters.
- Monitoring using navigator/co-navigator principles.
- Propulsion and manoeuvring systems and their characteristics.
- Berthing, un-berthing, anchoring.
- Manoeuvring in shallow waters, interaction.
- The effect of wind and current on ship handling.
- Ship handling in restricted waters.
- The use of tug boats.
- IAMSAR Vol.III, MOB manoeuvres.
- COLREG's.
Organisation
Teaching methods/techniques used in the course are lectures, simulator exercises (NOS/BOS), desk top simulator exercises (WebSeaman) and practical ship handling on training vessel. All simulation and practical exercises are compulsory.Literature
The necessary course literature is published on the course home page.Examination including compulsory elements
Part A: Written examination. 60%Part B: Simulator exercises and COLREG test. The final grade is decided based on the grade of the written exam (Part A).
The course examiner may assess individual students in other ways than what is stated above if there are special reasons for doing so, for example if a student has a decision from Chalmers on educational support due to disability.
