Knowledge and skills corresponding to the learning outcomes of the following courses: SJM005 Terrestrial navigation and seamanship

Aim

The course aims at providing the student with general knowledge of the function, usage, control of- and limitations of the nautical instruments How these instruments are linked together in systems and the information security of these systems. The aim of the course is also to provide the student with knowledge about different chart projections, concepts of geodesy and electronic chart systems.

Learning outcomes (after completion of the course the student should be able to)

- Explain basic geodetic concepts and principles for chart projections. 
- Explain measuring principles, technical structure, function and operation of the vessels navigation equipment (navigation charts, satellite navigation systems, radio navigation systems, compasses, speed and distance measuring devices, echo sounders, turn rate indicators, RADAR, AIS, ECDIS and integrated bridge systems) and to analyze the information from these in a correct manner. 
- Control function and accuracy of above equipment. 
- Analyse and calculate the accuracy of a position received from different position sources. 
- Explain the structure of the steering system. 
- Explain the structure and function of the course control systems.
- Understand Cyber Security and IT-threats against ship board systems.
