Aim

The course aims to give students a basic understanding of quality systems and of how shipping companies' safety organisation works in accordance with the international ISM code.

Learning outcomes (after completion of the course the student should be able to)

- Describe the background and development of the ISM Code
- Describe the difference between regulatory bodies
- Describe generic parts in quality management systems, such as ISO9000, ISO14000 & ISM - Explain the history of safety development in maritime sector in reactive and proactive safety improvement approaches.
- Apply basic principles, concepts and terms of risk assessment and safety management within the maritime transport context. - Describe the content of the Safety management system (SMS)
- Explain a risk analysis process according to IMO's Formal Safety Assessment process, including choice and use of appropriate theories and methods for hazard identification, risk assessment, risk control measure, and cost benefit assessment. - Design and document an analysis of risk assessment or safety improvement into a readable professional report.
-Produce a risk assessment report.

Content

Introduction to rules, legislation in safety management systems. ISM code background, content and practical application in maritime industry. Risk assessment and a written report for professional use.
Write a well-presented report in English. The report should be part of language development and focused on effective communication and an oral presentation technique. The text will be processed in several steps and given feedback in the form of peer review.

Organisation

Background education to the ISM Code of the SOLAS Convention
Review of practical ISM with its features from a user perspective.
reviewing sample SMS.
Produce an SMS in groups, in English.
Peer Review of each other's SMS, in groups.
Produce a risk assesment report in the English language.

Literature

ISM code, Resolution 1071(28) and lecture notes.

Examination including compulsory elements

Part A: Written exam
Part B: Report

The course examiner may assess individual students in other ways than what is stated above if there are special reasons for doing so, for example if a student has a decision from Chalmers on educational support due to disability.
