Aim

Dangerous goods
The aim is to give the student a good knowledge in handling and sea transport of dangerous goods.

Unitized cargoes
The aim is to give the student basic knowledge in cargo handling onboard RoRo- and container vessels, including understanding of cargo hold conditions and cargo securing. The student will also be trained in the use of loading and stability software.

Learning outcomes (after completion of the course the student should be able to)

Dangerous goods
1. Explain what dangerous goods are and the criteria for classification
2. Explain how danrous goods shall been packed prior to sea transportation
3. Determine how the dangerous goods shall be documented prior to loading
4. Apply the mandatory provisions regarding the stowage of dangerous goods on board ships
5. Apply the mandatory provisions regarding the segregation of incompatible goods due to the type of ship and the mode of transportation
6. Proficiency regarding both international conventions and national legislation regarding sea transport of dangerous goods
7. Explain the actions due to incidents and accidents with dangerous goods on board ships

Unitized cargoes
After course completion the student will be able to explain cargo handling onboard RoRo- and Container vessels, in purpose of the future role as responsible officer. The student understands the mechanism of cargo hold ventilation and air humidity, cargo securing and related loss prevention methods and actions. The student will be able to prove skill in the user of loading and stability software.

Examination including compulsory elements

Dangerous goods (part A)
Written examination of learning outcomes 1-7 and fulfilled attendance at all lectures (Part A).
For passed examination the necessity demands is at least 80% correct answer.

Unitized cargoes (part B)
Approved reports from cargo calculations och stabilitet calculations and written test.

The course examiner may assess individual students in other ways than what is stated above if there are special reasons for doing so, for example if a student has a decision from Chalmers on educational support due to disability.
