Course specific prerequisites

Knowledge and skills corresponding to the following learning outcomes:

- Identify and analyse traffic situations in open sea and act according to COLREG
- Describe ARPA function and its limitations
- Describe and compare information from visual observations, radar observations and AIS information
- Evaluate radar targets in relative and true motion
- Use logbooks for navigation

Aim

The course aims at developing students' abilities to identify, analyse and act in complex traffic situations at sea.

Learning outcomes (after completion of the course the student should be able to)

- Use trial function in the ARPA-radar
- Apply the COLREGS by identify, analyse and act in traffic situations within traffic separation schemes, narrow channels and in areas with high traffic density.
- Describe pros and cons with different radar setups
- Describe and use rules and regulations in Ship's routing and Ship Reporting Systems
- Describe the function of a Vessel Traffic Service (VTS)
