Aim

The purpose of the course is to provide training and education in order to fulfil the requirements as to become a radio operator in normal and emergency situations on board a commercial vessel and to introduce and train the use of maritime English when communicating.

Learning outcomes (after completion of the course the student should be able to)

(L1) Describe safety communication from a maritime perspective.
(L2) Explain the structure, subsystems and the use of the Global Maritime Distress and Safety System (GMDSS)
(L3) Explain the structure and usage of radio communication during ship operations.
(L4) Discuss the history, application and importance of IMO:s Standard Marine Communication Phrases.
(L5) Apply subsystems within the Global Maritime Distress and Safety System (GMDSS) in order to be able to transmit and receive distress, urgency and safety messages.
(L6) In a clear and structured way apply correct terminology (IAMSAR) when communicating with ships or other entities, especially distress, urgency and safety messages using IMO:s Standard Marine Communication Phrases.
(L7) use a professional language, orally and in writing, conveying a sequence of events and associated actions on board

Organisation

The education is divided in a series of lectures and with exercises in the radio simulator and in the language laboratory. All exercises are mandatory.

A major part of the course is based on studies outside of the class room and includes reading, preparation for the exercises and the possibility to use the radio simulator in order to train skills.

Examination including compulsory elements

Part A: Radio simulations. All exercises are mandatory and examines learning objectives L5 and L6.
Part B: Written examination. Examines learning objectives L1, L2, L3 and L4.
Part C: Hand in assignment. Examines learning objective L7.
