Aim

To provide the student with general knowledge in meteorology and oceanography in order to be able to plan and execute a safe sea voyage.

Learning outcomes (after completion of the course the student should be able to)

  1. Explain meteorological and oceanographic elements and processes 
  2. Explain different characteristics of weather systems, including tropical hurricanes and dangerous quadrant around lows (depressions)
  3. Demonstrate the ability to do weather reporting 
  4. Explain current systems in the oceans and the origin of sea waves 
  5. To use and analyse synoptic charts 
  6. Make a weather prognosis of a certain area and analysis of the sea conditions, using available meteorological information

Content

- Undergo of different meteorological concepts, processes, weather charts, observations and atmospheric affection
- Extreme weather phenomenas like tropical cyclones, tornadoes, hurricanes and storms
- The compositions of the sea and the theory behind waves and ocean currents  

Organisation

The course constitutes of lectures and practical exercises. The course will finish with a written examination.

Final grade: Scale (5, 4, 3, U).
