Eligibility
General entry requirements for bachelor's level (first cycle)Applicants enrolled in a programme at Chalmers where the course is included in the study programme are exempted from fulfilling the requirements above.
Specific entry requirements
The same as for the programme that owns the course.Applicants enrolled in a programme at Chalmers where the course is included in the study programme are exempted from fulfilling the requirements above.
Course specific prerequisites
None.Aim
The course teaches mathematical subjects such as vector algebra, plane and spherical trigonometry, as well as basic physics concepts, for use in other courses in the Nautical science programme.Learning outcomes (after completion of the course the student should be able to)
- Perform calculations of triangles, their sides, angles (in degrees or radians) and areas using similarity, the theorem of Pythagoras, the trigonometric functions and the laws of sines and cosines in the plane.- Use the trigonometric functions for arbitrary angles, defined by the unit circle, and construct and interpret the graphs of these functions with arbitrary periods.
- Utilize the vector concept with its operations, such as addition, e.g. to describe interacting forces or velocities.
- Use coordinate representation of vectors and the scalar product of vectors and with these tools calculate lengths and angles.
- Use suitable spherical triangles and the spherical laws of sines and cosines to solve problems in connection to movements along great circles on earth.
- Understand basic concepts of physics relevant to further studies in the program, such as force, energy, momentum, and angular momentum.

Written exam. Non-mandatory demonstration of problems on the blackboard can give bonus points on the exam. The course examiner may assess individual students in other ways than what is stated above if there are special reasons for doing so, for example if a student has a decision from Chalmers on educational support due to disability.
