Aim
The overarching purpose of the course is to provide an overview of the problems motivating us to study global systems, how global systems can be delimited and how we can gain knowledge about the systems. The course gives an overview of different global systems and how they differ. Further the course should provide basic knowledge about what science, knowledge system and models are.Learning outcomes (after completion of the course the student should be able to)
- Characterize and define global systems, and to describe the challenges for mankind related to them.
- Describe and apply basic systems thinking.
- Use basic concepts from theory of science to reflect upon how to study global systems scientifically.
- Together with others write an analytic text.
Content
- Basic concept from theory of science such as knowledge, science, falsifiability and the distinction between facts and values.
- Basic concept from systems science, such as components, surrounding and system boundaries.
- Descriptions of some global challenges and the systems need to understand them (For instance climate system, the socio-technical system and food production).
Organisation
The course consists of five different parts:1) Lectures about concepts in systems analysis and theory of science.
2) Lectures that describes different global systems and practical work that is informed by knowledge about global systems.
3) Seminars that is prepared in groups, where concepts is applied to concrete global systems
4) Report writing in groups where students are to describe a global system and how it may be studied
5) Oral presentations of the reports.
