Course specific prerequisites

Nothing else than what is required for the 5 years Mechanical Engineering programme at Chalmers.

Aim

The aim with the course is to help students acquire basic skills in Computer Aided Mechanical Design (Mechanical CAD). After finalising the course, the students shall be able to use Catia V5 as an active tool during product realization throughout the rest if their studies and in their future work place.

Learning outcomes (after completion of the course the student should be able to)

After completed course, the student should be able to
  • Describe and exemplify basic strategies, methods and tools for computer aided mechanical design
  • Create data basis for, process and produce a part through additive manufacturing
  • Apply basic general functions in Catia V5
  • Create, evaluate and suggest and perform changes to single parts in Catia V5 in a structured way
  • Create, evaluate and suggest and perform changes to single assemblies in Catia V5 in a structured way
  • Describe and exemplify basic drawing technique concepts
  • Create, evaluate and suggest and perform changes to drawings in Catia V5 in a structured way.

Content

The course comprises one general section and two main sections, CAD and drawing technique. The general section discusses and demonstrates different strategies, methods and tools for Mechanical CAD, e.g. additive manufacturing and geometry scanning.
The drawing technique section discusses:
  • view placements,
  • cross sections,
  • dimensioning,
  • dimensional tolerances,
  • geometrical tolerances.
The CAD section discusses general fundamental functions in Catia V5, as well as the workbenches:
  • sketcher,
  • part,
  • assembly,
  • drafting.
Knowledge acquired during the drawing technique lectures and exercises are then applied in the drafting workbench.

Organisation

The teaching consists of:
  • General lectures,
  • Demonstration and lab in additive manufacturing and geometry scanning,
  • Lectures and exercises in drawing technique,
  • Lectures and exercises in CAD modelling,
  • CAD modelling assignments,
  • CAD project.
To learn to model in solid modelling software it is of great importance that most of the education is carried out in front of the computer, using the software. In the CAD project the students will get the task, to be solved in groups of two, to design, evaluate, and suggest changes to a mechanical design.

Examination including compulsory elements

The examination is based on a computer aided exam, grades TH, and also an approved additive manufacturing assignment, an approved dugga (in-course written exams) in drawing technique and a approved CAD project work. Drawing technique is not part of the computer aided exam.

The course examiner may assess individual students in other ways than what is stated above if there are special reasons for doing so, for example if a student has a decision from Chalmers on educational support due to disability.
