Eligibility

General entry requirements for Master's level (second cycle)
Applicants enrolled in a programme at Chalmers where the course is included in the study programme are exempted from fulfilling the requirements above.

Specific entry requirements

English 6 (or by other approved means with the equivalent proficiency level)
Applicants enrolled in a programme at Chalmers where the course is included in the study programme are exempted from fulfilling the requirements above.

Course specific prerequisites

Knowledge comparable to years 1-3 on the Mechanical, Automation & Mechatronics or Industrial Design Engineering programs, including basic 3D CAD skills.

Aim

The course Advanced Computer Aided Design aims to provide an overview of the area IT support for product geometry development with focus on the use of CAD and CAT (Computer Aided Tolerancing) systems.

Learning outcomes (after completion of the course the student should be able to)

 * Evaluate the need for and potential of using IT support for the geometry process
 * Create parameterized, rule-based solid models of parts and assemblies
 * Create advanced surface models
 * Describe the functionality of CAD and CAT systems
 * Describe fundamental mathematical and computer science methods used in modern CAD systems
 * Describe fundamental mathematical methods used in modern CAT systems
 * Use CAD and CAT systems as tools in an integrated product development processes
 * Describe important trends in the area of IT support for geometry development
 * Describe fundamental functionality of PDM systems
 * Use PDM systems for vaulting and version control of engineering data
 * Independently obtain knowledge about how to solve engineering tasks

Content

The course contents cover six basic components of a geometry modelling system: * The industrial need for IT support for product geometry development * Theories and systems for geometry modelling * Theories and systems for Computer Aided Tolerancing (CAT) systems * Methods for modelling geometry-related processes and information * Methods and systems for Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) * Methods and systems for geometry data communication

Organisation

The course is organized around a series of lectures and a project work. The project work is a large part of the course where the student will train their skills on using CAD and CAT software for geometry development, and a PDM system for product data management.

Literature

To be decided

Examination including compulsory elements

Written exam, project work demonstration and report. The final grade will be based on 50% of the result on the written exam and 50% on the grade for the project.

The course examiner may assess individual students in other ways than what is stated above if there are special reasons for doing so, for example if a student has a decision from Chalmers on educational support due to disability.
