Course specific prerequisites
The course LMU602 Computer aided design, solid- and surface modelling, or equivalent knowledge.Aim
The course aims to study an industrial product development flow from concept to functioning prototype. The course also aims to understand the information a scanned 3D surface (point cloud) provides. The course also aims to study a product from a surface model perspective, and a solid model perspective. The course also aims to understand rapid prototyping opportunities and constraints with respect to the digital model that is provided.Learning outcomes (after completion of the course the student should be able to)
- have acquired understanding of the procedure to move between a physical and a virtual model.
- understand how to create an efficient flow between a physical and a virtual model in the product design process.
- acquired knowledge and achieved skills in scanning physical models and create digital models of the scanned point cloud.
- be able to reflect on a digital model's ability to be printed in a rapid prototype machine with respect to the material thickness and other limitations.
- acquire knowledge in how to from a surface model, create a solid model with wall thicknesses relevant for the product.
- understand what is required of a model if it is to be sent to rapid prototyping.
Content
Throughout the course follows a project, which aims to highlight the connection between digital models and physical models. The project begins in a task to design an object with certain input values. The subject is presented with the help of 2D and 3D sketches. The model is refined and after remodeling, the new model is loaded in the 3D scanner. The new scan data is used for creating new digital model. The final digital data is used to create a physical model with rapid prototype technique.Organisation

Active participation in project with written and oral reports.
